Bank accounts for newcomers to Canada

Canadian banks commonly advertise newcomer packages, but the promotional period is only one part of the decision. The lasting monthly cost, transaction allowance, accepted identification, and what happens after the offer ends matter more.

01

Understand your right to open an account

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains that consumers may be able to open a bank account even without a job or money to deposit, and may use specified combinations of identification. A bank can still refuse in defined circumstances.

Take the official identification list to the provider and confirm whether an appointment is required. Rules for opening remotely can differ from a branch process.

02

Read beyond the newcomer offer

Record the regular monthly fee, the promotional end date, the number of included transactions, Interac e-Transfer treatment, ATM network, overdraft charges, international transfer costs, and minimum-balance waiver.

Set a reminder before the promotional period ends. The account that is cheapest in month one may not remain cheapest after the first year.

03

Check low-cost and no-cost options

Canada maintains public information about low-cost and no-cost accounts. Eligibility and available features vary, so compare them with newcomer-labelled packages rather than assuming that a promotion is the lowest-cost route.

04

Treat credit as a separate decision

A chequing account does not require you to take a credit card. If a package includes or promotes credit, review the card’s annual fee, interest, foreign transaction charges, credit reporting, and application consequences independently.

05

Use the official channel

Verify the account on the bank’s Canadian website and confirm the legal institution, current fee schedule, accepted documents, and deposit-insurance information. Do not provide a SIN unless the bank explains why it is required for the specific account or tax reporting purpose.
